The handpainted "sponging" technique used in painting this dog pair dates back to the 17th and 18th Centuries in England. The technique involves using special hand-cut sponges to print color directly on the unfired ware.

English manufacturing plant is no longer producing these dogs thus making these dogs very collectible. Eight and 10 inch sizes are also available.
